Course Description

"I am an intuitive editor." This statement indicates the course content, emphasizing aesthetic skills, rather than technical skills. Intuition and intention play a significant role in editing, and as such, these terms will be treated seriously and in-depth. Addressing the aesthetic and dramatic aspects of editing in film and television involves not only dealing with common editing rules but also the artistic and creative dimension of editing as a language with its own vocabulary and specificity. This course will create a sense of inquiry and discussion about everything in this art and put the foundation for exploring broader horizons in the world of editing, which is considered one of the most important artistic and aesthetic tools in the film and television production industry.

Course Objective

By the end of this course, participants will:
• Discuss the concept of the shot as a cornerstone for editing and visual sequences.
• Identify the principles underlying visual sequences.
• Use artificial techniques in editing.
• Explain various shooting techniques (dramatic construction of shots) and editing.
• Distinguish between drama editing in film and television.

• Key principles for building visual sequences:
- Image, shot, sequence, and continuity standards.
- Technical, narrative, and aesthetic concepts of editing.
- Conclusive editing and assembly editing.

• Editing Elements:
- The concept of time and place in editing.
- Build characters and their relationship to place.
- Aesthetic and dramatic concept of visual transitions.
- Visual transition methods.

• Artificial techniques in editing:
- Split screen, picture-in-picture framing.
- Editing as an expressive subject, double exposure.
- Editing and art of collage.

• Camera style:
- Free camera style and multiple cameras.
- Editing interviews, dialogues, data.

• Drama editing in film and television:
- Types of drama: classical, structural, rhythmic, and descriptive.
- Editing rhythm and commentary rhythm.
- Open and closed drama stories.
- Causative editing.
