Course Description
This course aims to explain the internationally recognized editorial standards, understand the importance of the standards, their history, who set them and their specifications by providing examples of recent news materials produced by a large number of news organizations, with practical training to ensure that the trainees understand how to apply these editorial standards through developing their orientations, skills, and knowledge in a practical and scientific manner.
Course Objective
By the end of this course, participants will:
• Define the basic editorial standards.
• Develop a critical sense to assess the extent to which journalists adhere to journalistic standards.
Course Outline
• Introduction to journalistic editorial standards:
- Concept, evolution, and importance of editorial standards.
- Basic editorial standards: objectivity, accuracy, balance, and neutrality.
- Differences between different journalistic schools.
• Editorial standards for news:
- Specifications and roles of news journalists.
- News values and criteria for selecting news.
- Methods of establishing standards and how to verify them.
- Consequences of not adhering to these standards.
