Al Jazeera Institute launches a new course on “Editorial Standards of Journalism”

Al Jazeera Media Institute is launching a new training course in the field editorial standards of journalism, targeting journalists, reporters and broadcasters, as well as fresh graduates of media and journalism institutes who aspire to reinforce their commitment to professional values and to develop their critical thinking in the field of journalism practice.

The course aims to enable participants understand basic editorial standards and to develop their ability to monitor commitment of journalists to standards of accuracy, objectivity, balance and impartiality in media environment characterized by rapid change and increasing challenges of digital content.

The course is going to focus on a set of basic topics such as: an introduction to editorial standards of journalism with detailed explanation of the concept of standards, their evolution and their continuous importance, in addition to reviewing basic editorial standards such as objectivity, accuracy, balance, and impartiality and explaining differences between various schools of journalism. The course will also highlight journalistic standards for news in terms of specifications and role of news journalists, news values and news selection criteria.

The course will also explain methods for setting standards and how to verify them, in addition to studying repercussions of non-compliance with these standards in media work.

Course organizers at the Institute affirm their continuous attention to develop training programs that keep match with requirements of journalists and content creators in Arab world, noting that this new course stresses combining theoretical knowledge with practice, thus consolidating professional foundations required in digital media.
