Al Jazeera Media Institute launched a photojournalism course on its e-learning platform, in English language.
The course, presented by photographer and editor of Al Jazeera English Firas Ghani, explains in its theoretical content the evolution of photography equipment over time, and introduces trainees to principles and arts of professional photojournalism.
It also highlights ethical issues that photojournalists may face while performing their duties such as dealing with children’s images, images of those affected by war and armed conflict and vulnerable groups in societies.
As to practical training content, the trainer devoted a number of lessons to review the rules of photography such as triangulation rule, exposure triangle (aperture, light sensitivity, shutter speed), and how to choose the appropriate lenses for different shooting environments.
He also explained photo editing methods (montage) in professional ways that respect ethics of journalistic work and shed light on dividing lines between adding visual effects and manipulating images.
The course also did not neglect occupational safety measures for photographers covering areas of chaos and armed conflict, and provided practical guidance that protects photographers from dangers that may encounter them in such zones.
It is noteworthy that this course is an introduction to photojournalism, which aims to help beginner photojournalists rediscover photography techniques from a journalistic point of view and how to interrogate the image after understanding its meanings and connotations and finally, how to document events and narrate them with image only.
