AJMI HOSTS DIALOGUE ON SOUTH AFRICA-PALESTINE SOLIDARITY WITH TONY CARON

AJMI - Doha

The Al Jazeera Media Institute held a discussion with colleague Tony Caron, the Editor-in-Chief of AJ+ English, entitled "Journalism and the Links between South Africa and Palestine: Understanding the Context of Solidarity between the Past and the Present."

Caron reviewed the context of South African solidarity with Palestine in various political, social, and journalistic contexts, starting from the resistance against the apartheid regime in South Africa to the recent call made by South Africa against Israel in the International Court of Justice.

The discussion took place at the Al Jazeera Media Institute's auditorium and was attended by colleagues from various divisions of the network.

Caron discussed ways in which countries in the global South can liberate themselves from the dominance of Western media narratives regarding the Israeli occupation of Palestine. He shared his own experiences with censorship and pressures imposed on journalists in the media when covering news related to Palestine during his time in American journalism.

The discussion coincided with the release of the new issue of the Journalism Review magazine, published by the Al Jazeera Media Institute. The magazine addressed the challenges of Western media coverage of the Israeli war on Gaza.
