AJMI organizes a seminar on the US election coverage
AJMI - Doha
On Sunday, September 29th., Al Jazeera Media Institute organized a seminar on " The US Elections media coverage" presented by colleague Tony Caron, managing editor of AJ+ English.
The lecture, attended by many colleagues from across the network, explored angles/standpoints that journalists in the Global South should focus on when covering the U.S. elections, as they have to understand it in a different context of what mainstream U.S. media coverage and angles/ points of view in focus. This is possible by highlighting the differences between Western media coverage and that of Al Jazeera Plus English, and how each of them reflects different visions of American democracy.
Caron also reviewed the shortcomings of Western media coverage that often adopts the official narratives of U.S. political institutions without delving into the complex electoral system and its impact on election outcomes. In contrast to Al Jazeera Plus English approach which focuses on contradictions of American democracy and trying to understand its roots and reflects that to global audience, especially those in the South.
This seminar is part of a series of events organized by Al Jazeera Media Institute to discuss Press issues and its various challenges and open the door for dialogue between colleagues in the network on core issues affecting work.
