Bio

I am a senior executive at National World plc, one of the largest multimedia publishers in the UK, which has more than 130 online and print brands. I currently have two roles – Editorial Director of our North Division and Publisher of our Daily Press Division – with overall management of a large portfolio of news websites and daily and weekly print newspapers. My professional interests cover innovation in all areas of online and print publishing, as well as leading and managing successful teams of editors, journalists, designers and production staff all over the UK. I am passionate about developing the abilities of my staff to continually embrace new ways of working and to deliver trusted journalism to our loyal audiences. My day-to-day work goes hand in hand with training and consultancy for The Thomson Foundation, passing on skills to journalists in other parts of the world.

Experience

I have worked for 34 years as a reporter, editor and senior executive in the newspaper and online media industry in the UK, working on regional weekly, daily and national daily newspapers and running successful digital news teams. I have launched and run new publications and news websites, as well as teams of graphic designers, investigations and data journalists and many other projects. My work for the Thomson Foundation has included training in ethical journalistic practices, digital journalism, print design and other subjects for reporters and editors in places such as Sudan, Qatar, Malaysia and Eastern Europe. I worked for a year as a business mentor for a group of websites in Slovakia and the Czech Republic aimed at being the voice of youth in Eastern Europe. I have a great interest in exploring and developing new newsroom technologies. I recently partnered with an algorithmic-journalism agency to produce content for 100 of our websites and am currently working on a groundbreaking AI-driven production process for news page automation.
