“Managing Digital Newsrooms”, A new training course for journalists

AJMI – Doha

Al Jazeera Media Institute is offering a new remote training course titled “Managing Digital Newsrooms,” in response to the rapid transformations reshaping modern journalistic work environments. The course will be delivered by journalist Ahmed Ashour.

The course will take place from 26 to 28 April 2026 as part of the Institute’s online training programs. Participants are required to have a basic understanding of media and journalism concepts, along with practical experience in editorial and media work.

In this context, Ahmed Ashour, the course trainer, stated: “In digital newsrooms, success is no longer tied to speed of publishing or volume of output, but to our ability to make the right decision at the right moment. The story itself does not change, but its form and style adapt to each platform. True value lies not in being first, but in helping audiences understand. Ultimately, digital media is not what we publish, but what remains in people’s minds after it is published.

The course will focus on basics of modern digital newsroom work, strategies for managing editorial and production teams, in addition to using digital tools and artificial intelligence to streamline workflows and evaluating quality of journalistic output in line with digital space requirements.

The course content is structured around three main themes. The first introduces digital newsrooms by tracing the evolution from traditional models to Newsroom 2.0 and 3.0, including AI integration into editorial tasks. The second explores multi-platform news flow management through digital editorial standards, adapting stories to suit each platform, managing breaking news and crises, and addressing misinformation narratives. The third theme focuses on performance evaluation and development through digital journalism KPIs, audience engagement analysis and data-driven editorial decision-making.

This course comes at a time when media institutions are increasingly adopting digital newsrooms that combine content production and management across multiple platforms while engaging directly with audiences, amid intense competition with fast-paced social networks and digital publishing platforms.

It is worth noting that Ahmed Ashour is an executive leader in digital media at Al Jazeera Network, with over 20 years of experience in driving innovation and digital transformation, building and managing multi-location teams, developing digital products, and enhancing audience engagement across platforms. He has held several leadership positions, including Director of Digital Initiatives at Al Jazeera Network, editor-in-chief of digital content at Al Jazeera Channel, and founder and director of Al Jazeera Talk website.
