AJMI - Doha

Al Jazeera Media Institute recently published on its digital platforms one of research papers of "Al Jazeera Fellowship 2024", titled: Employing Artificial Intelligence in Data Journalism: A case study of the robot "Kashef" predicting outcomes of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

The paper, prepared by journalist Bassam Al-Shamiri, reviewed the experience of the robot "Kashef", which was developed by Al Jazeera Laboratories Unit (AJ Labs), and succeeded in predicting results of 67% of World Cup matches, based on predictive models enhanced by artificial intelligence and graphical analysis techniques.

The study also highlighted the ability of artificial intelligence to enhance data journalism and accelerating production of journalistic stories, in addition to improving journalistic content quality and increasing audience interaction.

The paper also pointed out that robot “Kashif” did not limit itself to providing predictions only, but also contributed to analyzing audience behavior and their interaction with content, through accurate mechanisms for processing big data.

The paper also covered the most prominent artificial intelligence tools used globally in the field of media, such as: machine learning, natural language processing and big data analytics.

The study also discussed important ethical challenges associated with the use of artificial intelligence in journalistic work, and pointed out the need for establishing editorial controls that maintain credibility and accountability in production of predictive content.

The paper also presented a future vision for expanding use of artificial intelligence in newsrooms in order to develop journalistic practice to go hand in hand with transition from traditional news coverage to predictive analytical journalism based on data.
