New release of Al Jazeera Fellowship 2025: Ethical and Professional challenge in covering war on Gaza (2023-2025)

AJMI - Doha

Al Jazeera Media Institute has published a new study within Al Jazeera Fellowship 2025 program, written by researcher Jana Hassan, under the title: “Ethical and professional challenges faced by journalists while covering the War on Gaza (2023–2025) on Social Media” based on semi-structured interviews with journalists and media practitioners.

The findings highlight difficulties inherent in war reporting, particularly in relation to civilian victims, amid challenges of balancing between public’s right to know and respect for dignity of those affected.

The study also addresses issues of objective balance and the psychological impact of coverage. It further reveals the overlap between journalism and humanitarian work, as well as institutional pressures, security threats and challenges of verifying information. This research adopts a qualitative approach aimed at deeply exploring the phenomenon and analyzing journalists’ experiences for better understanding of ethical and professional contexts surrounding their work.

The study emphasizes the importance of developing context-codes of conduct suitable for local and digital environments, alongside providing comprehensive support for journalists operating in war zones.

Jana Hassan is a Palestinian journalist specializing in news writing, reporting, and factchecking. She combines writing with visual production and television content editing.
