AJMI discusses professional ethics in the age of algorithms

AJMI – Doha

Al Jazeera Media Institute took part, via video conference, in the Middle East and Africa Creativity Lab held on 18–19 July, which explored the challenges facing the media in the era of algorithms and artificial intelligence.

The Institute was represented by Dr. Mei Shigenobu, who delivered the keynote speech titled “Editorial judgement in the age of algorithms: ethics at the heart of professionalism". She stressed the need to keep editorial judgement and ethical principles at the core of media practice, despite the growing influence of algorithms and artificial intelligence, the pursuit of reach, and increasing pressure to publish quickly.

Drawing on multiple field experiences from Al Jazeera, Dr Shigenobu explained that impactful journalism must combine clarity of purpose and technical skill on the one hand, with accuracy, independence, fairness, accountability, and care for the people whose stories are being told on the other.

The event was organised by the Directorate of Communication, Multimedia and Information of the Indonesian Students Association Worldwide – Middle East and Africa branch, under the theme “Developing ideas, creating work, safeguarding integrity". It aimed to enhance participants' skills in creative media, digital content management, visual design and journalism, while promoting a professional and responsible media culture.
