"Learn Arabic" Program Launches "News in Levels" Initiative

AJMI - Doha
As part of Al Jazeera Media Network’s efforts to spread Arabic language, "Learn Arabic" program of Al Jazeera Media Institute has launched "News in Levels" initiative. This project aims to transform news content into an interactive opportunity for language acquisition and skill development by linking real news content with carefully designed educational objectives.
Dr. Ibrahim Mansour noted that "News in Levels" initiative is the first of its kind in Arab world, as it delivers a single news story in linguistic forms tailored to different proficiency levels. This approach enables learners to acquire Arabic in a gradual context, to train learners on utilizing their accumulated learning experience to understand contemporary news produced by Al Jazeera Media Network. It specifically serves non-native speakers of Arabic language, particularly journalists, while also providing teachers and educational institutions with a valuable resource. The initiative adheres to international standards in language teaching, including the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), ensuring alignment of content with best global practices in foreign language education.
This method allows learners to follow the development of linguistic structures smoothly and without difficulty in understanding the meaning. The progression does not alter the core ideas of news item but focuses instead on language form and structure. It is based on three key aspects that evolve as the learner advances through levels:
- Text length: Learners begin with short, concise texts and gradually progress to longer, more detailed ones.
- Sentence structure and grammar: The first level presents straightforward, simple constructions, which become more varied and complex in higher levels.
- Audio recordings: Accompanying recordings start at a slow, clear pace and gradually increase in speed to match natural news delivery, thereby improving listening and pronunciation skills in a realistic way.
The initiative covers a wide range of topics—including politics, economics, culture, history, science, and arts, to match different learners’ interest. The website’s team is committed to publishing new content weekly, ensuring continuous engagement with the language through contemporary events and issues. To broaden access, translations of new vocabulary and expressions will be provided in four global languages alongside Arabic: English, French, Spanish, and Turkish. This multilingual support gives non-native speakers a greater chance to grasp learning process and benefit from parallel translations for a multicultural educational experience.
The initiative is part of Al Jazeera Media Institute’s relentless efforts to develop modern digital learning tools that combine news with training practice, in order to strengthen learners’ confidence in their skills and supports global status of Arabic through innovative solutions that keep pace with digital transformations.
