AJMI holds a seminar on war coverage

A digital seminar held by the Al Jazeera Media Institute under the title “War Coverage: Field experiences” explored challenges of reporting from conflict zones, drawing on experiences of journalists working in Gaza and Sudan. The session featured Rami Abu Taima, Al Jazeera correspondent in Gaza Strip, alongside Gaza-based journalist Mohammed Abu Qamar and the Sudanese correspondent Mohammed Mirghani.

The speakers highlighted the harsh conditions journalists face in conflict areas, stressing importance of preparing reporters to adapt to realities imposed by war, such as internet and electricity outages, need to develop alternative plans to cope with such disruptions. They also emphasized the importance of adhering to the highest professional safety standards, as well as planning strategies for dealing with psychological stress journalists may encounter while covering breaking and traumatic events. The discussion underscored the need to provide psychological and community support for media professionals working on the front lines.

The discussion, moderated by Mohammed Khamaiseh, a journalist at Al Jazeera Media Institute, also addressed importance of strengthening cooperation among media organizations to exchange expertise and resources, ultimately improving news coverage quality. The seminar further explored the role of technology in facilitating access to information and documenting events in a safe and effective manner.

The seminar concluded with a strong emphasis on importance of upholding journalistic ethics, particularly under difficult circumstances, to ensure objective reporting that reflects the reality of events and highlights civilians suffering in conflict zones.
